| Silhouette and garment type | Everything else, from fabric quantity to construction, follows from the shape. |
| Fabric | Shrinkage and drape change the pattern, so fabric is chosen before the pattern is final. |
| Measurements and size range | The base size is fitted first; the other sizes are graded from it. |
| Construction details | Collars, plackets, pockets and seams decide making time and cost. |
| Value addition | Embroidery or print position is fixed on the pattern, so it is decided before cutting. |
| Trims and labels | Buttons, zips and woven labels can carry their own minimums and lead times. |
| Colourways | Each colour needs its own fabric, and sometimes its own trims. |
